Measuring Guide
Good measurements begin with good photographs.
You do not need to be a technical draughtsperson. Use simple measurements, clear photos and a sketch where the shape is unusual.
Measure the object, not an old cover.
Where possible, measure the actual item or space the new product needs to fit. An old stretched or damaged cover may no longer represent the correct size.
For a first enquiry, approximate measurements may be enough. Canvasland can confirm what accuracy is needed before manufacture.
A simple measuring kit
- Tape measure
- Phone camera
- Paper or notes app
- Someone to help with large items
- A simple sketch for unusual shapes
Photograph, measure, label, send.
Photograph
Take one photo showing the whole item, then extra angles if the shape or fittings are complex.
Measure
Record width, length and height where relevant. Use millimetres or centimetres consistently.
Label
Mark measurements on a simple sketch or annotate a copy of the photograph.
Send
Include the images and dimensions with a short explanation of how the product will be used.
Different products need different information.
| Job | Useful first measurements | Helpful photographs |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture cover | Overall width, depth and height; note unusual arms, backs or protrusions. | Front, side and full furniture set. |
| Braai cover | Maximum width, depth and height, including handles or chimney sections. | Front, side and top where possible. |
| Bag | Length, width and depth of the item that needs to fit inside. | The item itself and any handles, cables or parts that protrude. |
| Trailer or vehicle cover | Overall dimensions plus relevant rails, corners, access points and fastening locations. | Both sides, front, rear and detail shots. |
| Mat | Finished length, width and thickness. | Space where it will be used and any existing mat if relevant. |
| Repair | Overall size of the product plus size of the damaged area if useful. | Whole product and close ups of damage. |
Send the photos and numbers together.
If anything important is missing, the team can tell you what else is needed before manufacture.
